Mga Panguri Muli (Adjectives Anew)

Mga Panguri Muli ( Adjectives Anew)

ADJECTIVES (Mga Panguri) are a rich and integral part of the Filipino language.
Adjectives may be used as subjects in a sentence, or as subjects complements,
as predicates, and of course,as modifiers.A large number of Filipino adjectives have
the prefix 'MA'. As we mentioned last week, there are so-called 'simple' adjectives
'(mga payak na panguri) that arebasic roots. We also have adjectives that are made
up of paired words.
The most common are adjectives that use affixes such as 'pala-', 'maka-', etc.
The most common adjectives use the prefix 'ma-' and do not have an affix.
As a generalrule, adjectives in the Filipino language are non-gender. However,
a numberof adjectives have been borrowed from Spanish. THese have retained gender specificendings , such as '-o', and '-a' fom the original language , e.g. (estupido/estupida-'stupid'; loko/loka - 'crazy ').

Mga halimbawa (Examples):maunawain ( understanding )pala-ngiti ( tends to smile often ))maka-Diyos ( godly, pro-God)matapat ( faithful, steadfast )tamad (lazy )mura (cheap )Maunawain si POrtia. ( Portia is understanding. )Pala-ngiti si Joey. ( Joey tends to smile a lot. )Ang maka-Diyos ay laging tumutulong sa kapuwa. ( The godly always helps one's fellow-men.)Ang asawang matapat ay mapalad. ( The faithful spouse is blessed .)Tamad na lalaki si JUan. (Juan is a lazy guy. )Pinili niya ang mga mura. ( The cheap ones were chosen by her .i.e.S/he chose thecheap items/merchandise.)The first two sentences above use the adjectives 'maunawain'and 'maka-Diyos' as predicates. The second two sentences have adjectives as modifiers describing the predicates 'asawang matapat' and 'tamad na lalaki'.THe last sentence uses the adjective like a noun and it is also the subject sentence,i.e.'mura'.Filipino adjectives have a wealth and variety of uses just like adjectives in manymodern languages. Filipino adjectives may also be used as adverbs.
